Richard A. Baetens

Katttskill Bay - Richard A. Baetens, 72 passed away on December 6, 2017 at Glens Falls Hospital, following a short illness.


Born at Glens Falls Hospital, Richard was the son of the late Adrian J. and Laura Baetens.  He is survived by his three daughters, Sara (Brian) Young of Putney, Vermont, Wendi (Paul) Hieronymus and grandchildren Hilde, Harold and Henry of Gofftown, New Hampshire, and Mollie (Eri) Silega and grandaughters, Gwenaelle and Lynette of Westfield, MA. Dick also leaves behind his longtime companion, Cindy Elderkin of West Springfield, MA and their dogs Lizzy and Kaleb.


Richard grew up surrounded by his loving family between Gloversville and Lake George. He graduated from Castleton State College, Vermont, with a B.S. in Education.  He settled in Westfield, MA, where he started a family of 3 daughters with Lois Baetens.  Richard continued his education at Westfield State College where he earned an M.S. in Education.  He was employed with the Springfield Public School System and most notably enjoyed his years teaching astronomy in the planetarium, at The New North School, now known as Germane Gerana Community School. He retired from teaching in 2000.  He was also the co-owner of Simons restaurant/bar located in downtown Westfield, MA. He was also involved in the Westfield community. coaching his daughters youth softball team. Richard was an avid basketball player and played in the Western Mass Men's basketball leagues as well as the Westfield pool leagues. After he retired he enjoyed joining friends for coffee at local establishments, Little George's and Andy's Variety and near his Lake George home at Bean's country Store.  He followed NY Giants football, New York Yankees baseball and Celtics and UMASS basketball teams.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Reverend Nelson and Helen Crossman of Lake George.


Interment and services will be held in Fort Edward Union Cemetery in the Spring of 2018 for family and friends and will be announced at a later date.  Attangements are under the direction of Radio Funeral HOmeInc. of GLens Falls.
