Mary Jane "Jane" Ashton Messenger

Pilot Knob*  Mary Jane ("Jane") Messenger of Pilot Knob & Boxford, MA died on July 13, 2014 after a short illness.  She was, as always, surrounded by her family.  Jane was born in NYC on Oct. 17, 1924, and was immediately adopted by Walter Atherton Fullerton and Ethel Durkee Fullerton of Saratoga Springs.  Jane was raised in Saratoga and frequented Saratoga Lake in the summer.  She attended Saratoga schools and Connecticut College for Women, graduating in 1946.  In 1947 Jane married William Thompson ("Tom") Ashton, also of Saratoga.  Jane and Tom raised their three children at Ten Acres and Elm Knoll Farm and spent their winters skiing and their summers at Pilot Knob on Lake George, NY.  Jane was very active in the Flower and Fruit Mission and numerous other Saratoga charities and fundraisers.  The couple enjoyed a long, happy marriage until tom's death in 1986.

In 1990, Jane married Archie A. Messenger, with an entourage of fourteen grandchildren leading them down the aisle.  Jane and Archie first lived in Waterville Valley, NH, where they shared their lifelong love of skiing with family and friends.  Most recently, the couple lived at Four Mile Village in Boxford, MA.  While in Boxford, Jane attended the 2nd Congregational Church, was active in the Ladies Charitable Society and was a member of the Boxford Village Garden Club.  In addition to developing many wonderful friendships, she continued to exercise by walking and participating in water aerobics five days a week.  Jane was an eternal optimist with a wonderful sense of humor.  Her greatest joy was being surrounded by family and friends.  Her graciousness, loving warmth, engaging smile and genuine interest in the lives of everyone around her will be missed by many.
