Maxine Wasserman

Kattskill Bay* Maxine Wasserman passed away early Tuesday June 17, 2014.  The world is a bit colder and sadder as a result.


Maxine was born July 29, 1943, in Long Beach, NY to Samuel and Bess Weissman. She graduated from Long Beach Hish school in June 1960, then attended Bryant College in Rhode Island and graduated with a legal secretary degree.She moved to New York City, where she worked as a legal secretary for several years.


In 1966, her life changed when she met Martin Wasserman and they married two short years later.  They were inseparable for the next 46 years.  In 1969 they moved to the Glens Falls area when Marty began teaching at Adirondack Community College.  Maxine found employment , first as a book store manager, then as a travel agent.  Shortly after, she began a career in social work with the Head Start program in Warren County and then earned her master's degree in social work from Yeshiva University. She then worked for 2 years in the psychiatric unit at Glens Falls Hospital and went on to establish her own private practice, which she maintained until her retirement in December 2005.


Retirement led to extensive worldwide travel, including to Vietnam, France, Spain and Honduras. Marty and Maxine spent 6 months in Prague, the Chech Republic, with Maxine teaching English as a 2nd language.  Upon her return she served as a volunteer, working for Meals on Wheels and Carndall Public Library.  She was an avid hiker and cross country skier and had an abiding love of nature and the Adirondacks.  She was also a gifter quilter, a travel photographer and a voracious reader, averaging two books per week.


Maxine was predeceased by her parents and a daughter, Shoshannah.  She is survived by her husband, Martin, daughter and son-in-law Rebecca and Paul Rubenstein; granddaughter, Sasha; and brother, Stephen (Julie) Weissman.


Interment too place at a private ceremony Thursday June 19, 2014.  A memorial ceremony/celebration honoring Maxine's life will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday August 23, 2014, at Temple Beth El Church, 3 Marion Ave., Glens Falls, NY 12801.
