James Edward Reik

E. Hartford, CT * James Edward Reik , 89, died April 15, 2014 at his home from Parkinson's disease.  He was predeceased by a grandaughter, Emily Reik in 2009.


James is survived by his wife Cynthia Majorie West Reik, whom he married in 1950 after having known here since he was 12. She was the sister of his best friend Richard. He is also survived by his four children, Deborah (Andrew Levinson) of Brooklyn, NY, Jonathan (Jane) of West Hartford, CT, David (Judith Lohman) of Farmington, CT and Constance (Michael Herwood) of West Hartford, CT.   In addition he leaves 7 grandchildren: Dr. Margot Dayton (Matthew), Julie Breedon (Simon), Eleanor Levinson, Amanda Levinson, Lindsay Reik, Daniel Herwood and Samuel Levinson. He also leaves 3 great-grandchildren: Allison and Grace Dayton and Colton Breedon.


He was educated at the Bronxville Public School, Princeton (class of 1949) and Harvard Law School (class of 1952). James served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945, achieving the rank of 2nd lieutenant while learning to pilot B17's and B29's.  He and Cynthia moved to West Hartford in 1955. James worked for Hartford Insurance Group until his retirement in 1985.  Before his retirement, he was on the Board of the National Mortgage Bankers Association and became an officer at The Hartford. He also taught Business Law at UConn Business School. After his retirement, he was counsel to the State Employees Retirement Board.


James had a house on Lake George in Pilot Knob and spent time there every summer swimming, sailing, boating and exploring with all of the generations of his family, including his mother until 2002.  Many adventures have been launched from that house and over the years numerous friends have enjoyed it. 


A memorial service was held on May 3, 2014.  Donations may be made to either the Hartford Friends Meeting or a charity of your choice.
